As a boater, you probably spend a lot of time caring for your vessel; polishing the hull, checking the engine, and getting it ready for the water. But what about your boat trailer? At On The Water Marine Insurance, we’ve seen too many boaters overlook this essential piece of equipment, only to face breakdowns or accidents on the road. Recently, I put new lights and tires on my trailer and turned it into a hands-on lesson for my boys. Here’s why regular trailer maintenance matters and how you can keep yours in top shape.
The Hidden Risks of Neglecting Your Trailer
Your boat trailer might seem like a simple tow-along, but it’s your lifeline between home and the launch site. Worn-out tires, rusty brakes, or a faulty hitch can lead to serious issues. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that trailer-related failures contribute to thousands of accidents each year. For boaters in states like Michigan or Texas, where long hauls to the water are common, neglecting maintenance isn’t just inconvenient, it’s risky. Plus, poor upkeep can complicate insurance claims if damage occurs.
My Recent Trailer Upgrade
Last week, I noticed my trailer tires were showing some signs of wear. I picked up a set of new tires (including a new spare) and had my boys join me. With a jack and some tools, we spent an afternoon swapping them out. It wasn’t just about the tires; it was a chance to teach them how to change a tire. Watching them learn hands-on reminded me why we started On The Water Marine Insurance: to support families who love the water, step by step.
Why Regular Maintenance Is a Must
- Tire Checks: Inspect tires monthly for wear, pressure (check the manual for PSI), and damage. My new tires gave me peace of mind, and teaching my boys to change them was a bonus lesson (see the photo below!).
- Brake Maintenance: Rusty or sticky brakes can fail under load. Test them annually or after water exposure, especially in humid states like Florida.
- Hitch and Coupler Care: Grease the hitch and check the coupler for wear. A loose connection almost cost me a trip last season!
- Bearing and Suspension: Grease bearings every season and look for sagging springs. This prevents breakdowns and extends trailer life.
- Lights and Wiring: Ensure all lights work—taillights, brake lights, and turn signals. During my last inspection, I noticed a burned-out tail light, so I swapped them all for energy-efficient LEDs. A quick test now keeps me road-legal and safe.
A Personal Note from the Inspection
That inspection wasn’t just routine, it sparked a realization. Spotting that burned-out light reminded me how easy it is to miss small issues. Swapping to LEDs not only fixed the problem but also improved visibility for night hauls. It’s these little checks that keep your trailer and your boating adventures on track.

Isn’t my Trailer Covered by my Car Insurance?
You might assume your boat trailer is fully protected under your car insurance, but that’s only partly true. While your trailer is hitched to your vehicle, your car’s liability coverage typically extends to it. For example, if your trailer swings and damages someone else’s property, your vehicle liability might cover the cost.
However, here’s the catch: the trailer itself isn’t protected. Any damage to the trailer, whether from a collision or theft, won’t be covered unless it has its own policy or is part of your boat insurance.
