What Charter Captains Need to Know About Insurance on Lake Erie
On March 7, 2026, I had the opportunity to attend, and speak at, the 45th Annual Ohio Charter Captains Conference in Huron, Ohio, hosted by Ohio Sea Grant.
For me, the day started a little earlier than most. I’m based in Cincinnati, which meant a 2:15 AM alarm and pulling out of the driveway by 3:00am to make the trip up to Lake Erie.
I rolled into Sandusky Bay right as the sun was coming up, and if you’ve spent any time on that water, you know there’s no better way to start a day like that. Calm water, quiet marinas, and a reminder of why so many captains build their lives around it. That set the tone for a really solid day.

Why This Conference Matters for Ohio Charter Captains
The Ohio charter industry is constantly evolving. Regulations change. Fisheries shift. Insurance markets tighten and loosen.
This event brought together:
- Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) fisheries and law enforcement
- U.S. Coast Guard updates for 2026
- Maritime licensing experts
- Lake Erie fisheries researchers
- Commercial fishing program leaders
For Lake Erie charter captains, this is one of the best opportunities each year to stay ahead of both operational and regulatory changes.nt Goes Here
My Talk: Ohio Charter Insurance Explained
I spoke on “The Next Wave of Charter Insurance”, focusing on how Ohio charter insurance actually works, not from a sales perspective, but from how policies are structured and underwritten.
Here are the key takeaways for Ohio charter captains:
1. How Many Charter Days You Run Drives Your Insurance
One of the biggest factors in charter boat insurance in Ohio is how often you run trips:
- Under ~30 charter days per year
→ Often eligible for a personal boat policy with a charter endorsement - Over ~30 charter days per year
→ Typically requires a full commercial charter insurance policy
This is one of the most important distinctions, and one of the most misunderstood.
2. Your Operations Change Your Risk Profile
Not all Ohio charter captains are the same, and insurance companies know that.
Your risk increases if you:
- Run trips at night
- Allow passengers to swim, dive, or enter the water
- Operate in more complex or higher-risk conditions
These operational details directly impact:
- Your eligibility
- Your premium
- Your available coverage options

3. Experience Matters More Than Most Captains Realize
In the Ohio charter insurance market, your experience as a captain plays a major role.
More experienced captains often get:
- Lower premiums
- Higher liability limits
- Access to better insurance companies
Less experienced operators may face:
- Coverage restrictions
- Lower liability availability
- Fewer carrier options
4. Not All Insurance Companies Treat Charter Risk the Same
We reviewed 6 different insurance companies that write Ohio charter boat insurance, and the reality is:
Every company evaluates charter risk differently.
Some are better for:
- Part-time charter operations
- New captains
- Inland (Lake Erie) risks
Others are designed for:
- Full-time commercial charter businesses
- Higher liability needs
- More complex operations
Choosing the right insurance company matters just as much as the policy itself.
5. Some Charter Policies Can Replace Lost Income
For full-time Ohio charter captains, one of the most overlooked coverages is loss of charter income. If your boat is damaged from a covered claim and you can’t run trips, some policies can help replace the income you’re losing while the boat is down.
That matters if:
- Chartering is your primary income
- You’re booked out weeks or months in advance
- A single loss could shut down your season
Not every policy includes this, and when it is included, the limits and conditions vary significantly.
This is one of the biggest differences between a basic policy that just fixes your boat and a well-structured charter policy that protects your business
6. A Legal Trend Affecting Charter Insurance
We also discussed a recent Supreme Court case:
Great Lakes Insurance SE v. Raiders Retreat Realty Co., LLC
The key takeaway for Ohio charter captains:
More marine insurance policies are now including “choice of law” provisions.
This can impact how claims are handled and which legal rules apply in a loss. It’s something we expect to see more of, especially in commercial charter policies.
Lake Erie Charter Industry: Strong Community, Valuable Insights
Beyond the presentations, this conference is about the people. It was great connecting with the captains, guides, industry vendors and partners,.
A big thanks to Tory Gabriel and the Ohio Sea Grant team for putting together another strong event for the Ohio charter community.
Final Thoughts: Ohio Charter Insurance Is Not One-Size-Fits-All
If there’s one takeaway from the conference, it’s this: Your charter insurance should match how you actually run your boat. Part-time vs. full-time matter, experience matters, operations matter; too many Ohio charter captains are either:
- In the wrong type of policy
- Underinsured
- Or don’t fully understand how their coverage works
