Ohio Boat Insurance from Ohio Agents!
As a marine insurance broker based right here in Ohio, we know the unique needs of Ohio boaters firsthand. Ohio is home to a lot of great boating spots, from the Great Lakes to hidden gems like Catawba Island and Alum Creek. But with the joys of boating comes the responsibility of making sure you’re covered for the unexpected, whether that’s a storm, an accident, or something as simple as dock damage.
That’s where having the right boat insurance in Ohio comes in. Ohio boaters face unique conditions, and it’s essential to have coverage that’s built to handle those risks. Not every policy is created equal, and working with a marine insurance broker ensures you get the specialized coverage that fits your needs. Let’s take a minute and answer some of the more frequent questions you might have.
Shouldn’t I Just Add My Boat to My Homeowners Insurance?
This is a question I get all the time: “Why not just add my boat to my homeowners policy?” It seems like a convenient option, but here’s the thing—boat insurance through a homeowners policy usually doesn’t provide the same level of protection as a dedicated marine policy.
We work with carriers that are dedicated to the marine space. That means they have marine claims teams who know how to handle boating issues, from storms to collisions. And when you have a true marine policy, you often get additional coverage that homeowners policies can’t match, like fuel spill protection.
For example, a marine policy typically covers fuel spills up to the limits set by the Oil Pollution Act, which is currently $1,076,000. That’s designed to cover you in case of a major spill. On the other hand, a homeowners policy that includes boat coverage might only cover fuel spills up to your property damage liability limit—usually around $300,000 to $500,000. That could leave you seriously underinsured in the event of a larger spill.
That’s why it’s important to work with a marine insurance broker—someone who knows the ins and outs of boat coverage and can ensure you’re protected with a policy that fits your boating lifestyle.
How Boat Insurance Pricing Works in Ohio
Boat insurance pricing varies depending on the type, age, and value of your boat. From my experience, here’s a breakdown of how different carriers typically approach pricing here in Ohio.
- Have a newer boat? If your boat is less than 10 years old, especially if it’s a high-value cruiser or yacht, Chubb tends to offer some of the best rates. They’re highly competitive for newer vessels and offer excellent coverage options.
- Own an older boat? For boats that are over 10 years old, American Modern (AMIG) is typically your best option. They’re great for larger, older boats and offer competitive pricing. Just keep in mind that once your boat reaches 15 years of age, they do require a marine survey if it’s 27ft or greater in length.
- Have a new pontoon or bass boat? For newer pontoons and bass boats, American Modern, Progressive, and Foremost are usually strong contenders. They offer competitive pricing and solid coverage, making them a great fit for these types of boats.
- Into wake boats or walleye fishing boats? If your boat is designed for water sports or fishing, Travelers is often where you’ll find the most competitive pricing. In my experience, they provide excellent rates for these specific types of boats.
- Need fast, hassle-free coverage? If you’re looking for quick coverage without the need for a marine survey, Progressive and Ahoy are both strong options. In just a few minutes, we can get you covered, making these carriers ideal if you want to hit the water fast.
- Have a smaller or faster boat? For boats under 27 feet or performance boats up to 120 mph, Foremost could be a solid choice. They don’t require surveys and tend to focus on smaller vessels like pontoons and fast boats, based on what I’ve seen across the market.
Important note: Some of these carriers, like Chubb, American Modern, and Foremost, require you to work with an agency like mine to get a quote. You won’t be able to go online and get a direct quote from them, so it’s important to work with a marine insurance expert who can shop these specialized carriers on your behalf.
