High-Performance Center Console Insurance

If you’ve shopped insurance for a high-performance center console, you’ve probably discovered something frustrating. Not every boat insurance company is built to insure these boats.

Once you move into triple, quad, or even five-outboard center consoles, you’re often dealing with vessels capable of 80, 90, or even well over 100 mph. Add offshore fishing, trips to the Bahamas, poker runs, and values approaching or exceeding a million dollars, and your insurance options become much more specialized.

Performance Center Consoles Are Different

A triple or quad-engine center console isn’t simply a larger fishing boat. Think of vessels like Nor-Tech, MTI, Yellowfin, Statement Marine, Deep Impact, Freeman, Invincible, Contender, SeaHunter, Midnight Express, HCB, or Valhalla.

Insurance companies evaluate these vessels differently because they present a unique combination of risk factors, including:

  • Higher operating speeds
  • Increased horsepower
  • Offshore navigation
  • Bahamas and Caribbean travel
  • Higher replacement values
  • Expensive electronics and accessories
  • Greater theft exposure

Each of these factors influences which insurance companies are willing to write the risk and how they’ll underwrite it.

Engine Count Is Only Part of the Story

When it comes to insuring one of these boats, we look at a combination of factors that include:

  • Total horsepower
  • Top speed
  • Hull value
  • Prior boating experience
  • Previous high-performance ownership
  • Navigation plans
  • Storage location
  • Hurricane exposure

As a marine insurance broker, we utilize different companies for different boats, and each company has their own set of guidelines. For example, one insurance company may be comfortable with triple outboards producing up to a certain horsepower, while another may focus more heavily on the vessel’s speed or overall value. A boat equipped with triple Mercury 300s may fit one market, while another with triple or quad Mercury 500Rs could require an entirely different insurance carrier.

The number of engines matters, but it’s only one piece of the overall picture.

Experience Matters Just As Much As Boat Size

One of the biggest misconceptions we see is that insurance companies only care about the length of your previous boat. That’s only part of the equation.

Many specialty marine insurers also look closely at your experience operating high-performance boats.

For example, someone moving from a 32-foot center console capable of 55 mph into a boat capable of nearly 100 mph represents a much different underwriting decision than someone who has spent years operating performance boats with similar speeds.

Just because you’ve owned large boats doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve owned fast boats.

Theft Protection Is Becoming Increasingly Important

High-performance center consoles are among the most desirable boats on the market. Unfortunately, they’re also attractive theft targets.

Many companies now require permanently installed GPS tracking systems to qualify for theft coverage or to receive their best policy terms. These systems are far different than consumer tracking devices like an Apple AirTag.

Insurance companies typically expect a permanently installed marine tracking system with an active subscription that allows the vessel to be located if it’s stolen.

Depending on the insurance company, additional anti-theft measures may also improve your coverage or reduce the deductible that applies to a theft claim.

Requirements vary by insurer, which is another reason it’s important to work with someone familiar with these specialty markets.

Not Every Insurance Company Wants These Boats

Many people start by requesting quotes from the same companies that insure their family runabout or pontoon. Sometimes that works. Many times, it doesn’t.

Once you begin looking at higher horsepower, faster speeds, offshore operation, or larger values, the number of available insurance companies becomes much smaller.

Fortunately, there are specialty marine insurance carriers that understand this segment of the boating market and have underwriting guidelines designed specifically for these types of vessels.

Specialty Insurance Markets Continue To Expand

The good news is that the insurance market continues to evolve.

As high-performance center consoles become more popular, several companies have expanded the types of boats they’ll consider. In fact, some markets that historically stopped at quad-engine boats are now beginning to insure select five-outboard configurations as well.

That’s encouraging news for owners because it creates more competition and more insurance options than were available just a few years ago.

Which Boats Commonly Require Specialty Insurance?

While every situation is different, performance models from manufacturers such as Nor-Tech, MTI, Statement Marine, Deep Impact, Freeman, Yellowfin, Invincible, Contender, Midnight Express, HCB, Valhalla, and Cigarette’s center console lineup frequently fall into these unique markets because of their speed, horsepower, offshore capabilities, or value.

That doesn’t automatically mean they require a specialty policy, but these boats often benefit from working with an insurance broker who understands the unique underwriting guidelines associated with performance center consoles.

The Bottom Line

High-performance center consoles represent one of the most specialized segments of the recreational boating market.

The combination of speed, horsepower, offshore operation, and high values means they’re often evaluated very differently than the average recreational boat.

Whether your boat has three, four, or five outboards, the goal isn’t simply finding an insurance company willing to write the policy. It’s finding one that understands how you use the boat and provides coverage that’s designed for it.

At On The Water Marine Insurance, we specialize exclusively in marine insurance and regularly work with owners of high-performance center consoles. If you’re shopping insurance for a Nor-Tech, MTI, Yellowfin, Freeman, Statement Marine, or another performance center console, we’re happy to help you find the market that’s the best fit for your boat and the way you use it.
